I played sports, went camping (it doesn't count if you're not in a tent!), and loved traveling.
I enjoyed hanging out with friends and rarely passed on an opportunity to socialize, talk, and laugh.
I graduated from college and was anxious to find out what lay ahead of me and the future my career might take.
I've been on a crutches most of the last two years. Sports, hiking and the outdoors are things of the past.
I rarely feel up to socializing. On days when I do feel better, I worry that someone will touch me and cause my pain to flare.
My degree is unused; my career, unbegun. I still have hope that one day life for me will begin again. I fight CRPS every minute of every day.
I ran cross-country at TIU while studying Sports & Wellness Management. My first year, then again as a senior, I suffered a stress fracture to my lower left leg. That injury turned into CRPS. The fracture healed, but somehow my brain never got the message.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a rare chronic pain condition caused by the malfunction of the nervous system, often after an injury. It is characterized by severe burning pain and hypersensitivity. The spread of the disease to other body parts is common.
My goals are simple. I want to walk without crutches, eat my favorite foods, and get a full night’s sleep. I want to resume living life. I believe these things are possible. I’ve seen others come through the fire. I battle CRPS everyday to do the same.
